In 1997, the Seniors Committee of the American Federation
of Television and Radio Artists and the Screen Actors Guild
formed the AFTRA/SAG Radio Players for the purpose of keeping
alive the uniqueness of radio as the theater of the imagination.
Several times a year audiences are invited to witness the
performance of classic radio scripts by voice actors, sound
effects artists employing as many manual devices as possible,
and, often, a real, live keyboard player. And the AFTRA/SAG
Players stay faithful to the original model by having to get
it right the first time--no retakes permitted. Some of the
group's actors appeared in network radio drama when Chicago
was a major production center. All the members of the troupe
are professionals who made, and, in many instances, continue
to make their livings before microphones and in front of cameras
and audiences.
The AFTRA/SAG Senior Radio Players, in association with Chicago DCA
Theater, offer 7 shows for 2012.
What is the mission of the AFTRA/SAG Senior Radio Players? To demonstrate the
amazing listener-gripping power of old-time radio drama and comedy -- even when the
audience is in the studio observing it being made. The group’s steering committee spends
an abundance of its time on the selection of the best material from thousands of available
scripts and turns them over to directors and producers for auditions, rehearsals, and live
presentation.
Come join us at the Claudia Cassidy Theater on the second floor of the Chicago Cultural
Center, 77 E. Randolph (at Michigan Avenue). Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.
Admission is free and reservations are not required, but it’s first come, first seated. Please click on Upcoming Events to discover the 2012 schedule.
